WE MUST PREACH THE CROSS.
I believe that there is an art to preaching. I also understand that there are those who are better at it than others. I can name many skilled orators and great bible expositors who are masterful in their presentation. I see many on Christian television.
The ole’ country preacher said it best when he said, good preaching is like this. You tell them’ what you gonna tell em’. You tell em’ and then you tell em’ what you told em’.
The oratory skills are good, a masterful presentation is good. Doing what the ole’ preacher said is good. What I’d like to suggest is something in addition. How we preach is not nearly as important as what we preach.
Well polished messages without the preaching of the cross is like eating Corn Flakes without the milk. Spider-Man without Ironman. Jay Z’ without Beyonce.
Paul put it like this.
1 Cor. 4:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
The Bible calls the preaching of the cross, the power of God. A well trained and skillful preacher without being anointed and sent by God is what’s producing today’s local churches that don’t resemble what God had in mind when He sent Jesus.
The preaching of the cross in spirit and power is what will change lives. When preaching is art only it doesn’t change lives it makes people like me change the channel.
It’s not just how we preach, it’s what we preach.
