War on biblical illiteracy. Word for today: Truthiness.
Truthiness is the belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the intuition or perceptions of some individual or individuals, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts. (It just feels like it’s true even if it’s not.)
This year the church has got to wage war on biblical illiteracy and combat the assault on objective truth. This word “Truthiness” was introduced on the Stephen Colbert show a few years ago.
It has become the standard for this generations handling of facts and the intellectual properties of scientific research.
We live in what’s called a Post Modern Society. Post Modernism seeks to erase any ultimate truth. Post Modernist believe that there is no “one” truth and that “no one” can tell the story of life. This philosophy eliminates the role and need of a gospel preacher. Also, this would discredit and distort the metanarrative that is so clearly hidden for our discovery in the word of God. (To explain: (There are many things in the word of God that God has hidden for us, not from us). We must be of the persuasion that, a proper understanding of the written word of God can explain everything there is to know about life.
Philosophies have been tossed around for years about truth. Listen to one ancient discussion between two well known Greek philosophers.
A Conversation Between Protagoras and Socrates (4th Century B.C.)
Protagoras: Truth is relative. It is only a matter of opinion.
Socrates: You mean that truth is mere subjective opinion?
Protagoras: Exactly. What is true for you is true for you, and what is true for me is true for me. Truth is subjective.
Socrates: Do you really mean that? That my opinion is true by virtue of its being my opinion?
Protagoras: Indeed I do.
Socrates: My opinion is: Truth is absolute, not opinion, and that you, Mr. Protagoras, are absolutely in error. Since this is my opinion, you must grant that it is true according to your philosophy.
Protagoras: You are quite correct, Socrates.
The argument was futile then and it’s futile today.
So, for the record. Truth is not relative. Truth is not a matter of opinion. What is true to you is not true because it’s true to you. What is true to me is not true because it’s true to me. Truth is not subjective. Your opinion is not true by virtue of it being your opinion.
In conclusion, God word is objective truth that is not up to be interpreted by the opinions of men. It is not subject to our cultural biases or our feelings.
Let’s not allow this society and “TRUTHINESS” to replace what we know to be tried and true. The tomb is empty.
